The Master Plan of Delhi envisages an eight-lane Metro network to be completed and implemented in four phases, connecting almost every part of Delhi – including the domestic and international air-terminals – with the well developed satellite towns like Noida and Gurgaon of the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Work on Phase I was started on October 1st, 1998 on three 65 km long lines. Of this 47.5 km line was to be elevated, about 13 km underground and 4.5 in surface corridors. Done in the most professional manner Line I of the Delhi Metro was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 24, 2002. Metro is now being used by more than 600 000 commuters every day and has inculcated a strong sense of pride and elation among the people of Delhi.
